The "basement" reference is because he's talking about the "mother-in-law box". Most men hate their mother-in-laws, so we do anything we can to put distance between us and them whenever possible. Vintage cars from the 20's and 30's had a separate seat outside the main part of the car called the "mother-in-law seat".

That explains it. My husband, for 6 months every day (after he'd arrived home from work) walked around a teak table saying, "hm.. yes, I must fix this" and one day I just couldn't stand it any more and before he could finish his walk around it again, I grabbed the table and smashed it outside on the concrete. It drove me crazy. Some nothing box...
